Peter Kruse Larsen - Landscapes and other works

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In this exhibition, Peter Kruse Larsen takes his starting point in the station building’s unique atmosphere of intensity and local history. From here, he reaches out towards the spirit of a more recent era. The works are created on and from unconventional materials – often old hardboard panels found at recycling centres. The paintings are complemented by objects and artefacts of symbolic significance, which also relate to the building and its history.

Opening reception with free admission on Saturday 29 August, 2–4 pm
The exhibition is open Thursday–Sunday, 11 am–4 pm, through 18 October 2026.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Peter Kruse Larsen, born in 1962, graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1985 to 1992. Since 2019, he has been based on Bornholm.

Peter Kruse Larsen describes his approach to art:
“My work with visual art takes its starting point in the surrounding reality, with landscapes and still lifes, which I also worked with when I received instruction at the Glyptotek during my youth. In addition, I work with objects, sculptural projects and installations, which are often site-specific in nature.

At the Academy of Fine Arts, the entire concept of art underwent a radical change. Painting and art as they had traditionally been understood were in crisis. Minimalism, which I encountered at the Academy, opened up a more concrete and less intellectual path for me, leading me to experiments with and studies of alchemy. This so-called occult science contains a key to a relationship with reality that connects inner and outer reality – the personal with creation itself. My work therefore incorporates psychological and philosophical considerations as well as scientific and religious reflections.”

“In 2019, I bought part of the village school in Poulsker with the idea of moving to Bornholm and taking up landscape painting again, while developing it further. This was part of a search for the core of the relationship between our experience of the world and the world itself.

In recent years, journeys to the Faroe Islands have expanded my range of subjects.

The magnificent nature of the Faroe Islands has an irresistible appeal as a subject for my work. Here there is a unique opportunity to approach the source of experience through a confrontation with the nature of the elements and the experience of them, allowing the themes to meet around the subjective and immediate and the objective – something I have immersed myself in during recent years.

It is the immediacy of the experience that I want to portray. Those moments when the distance between the outer and inner disappears, and the nature of our surroundings finds a connection with human experience and our understanding of it. The paintings are therefore painted on site, directly in front of the subject.”
