The large, open area outside Gudhjem Museum is exceptionally beautiful.
The view across Svaneke Bay and over land and sea is magnificent. The site slopes towards the south, allowing the sun to warm it from early spring until late autumn. It is therefore an ideal setting for both art and nature.<\/p>

Flower-rich habitats have become increasingly scarce in the Danish countryside. Almost everywhere, flower meadows have been ploughed up, fertilised or removed from the traditional extensive grazing and haymaking practices that flowers, bees and butterflies depend on.
This has led to a crisis, particularly for butterflies, many of which have become rare or disappeared altogether.<\/p>

Eight species \u2013 fransk bredpande, kommabredpande, enghvidvinge, kirseb\u00e6rtakvinge, okkergul pletvinge, dv\u00e6rgbl\u00e5fugl, sortplettet bl\u00e5fugl and sortbrun bl\u00e5fugl \u2013 have become extinct on Bornholm since 1950.
Today, only 39 species of butterflies breed on Bornholm, and three of them \u2013 klitperlemorsommerfugl, violetrandet ildfugl and engbl\u00e5fugl \u2013 are extremely close to disappearing or may already have gone.<\/p>

In short, something needs to be done, and because of its location, Gudhjem Museum Park makes a valuable contribution. The challenge is now to manage the area extensively, allowing wild plants and a rich diversity of flowers to return, so that the site will once again be buzzing with life and filled with colourful butterflies.<\/p>

This is how we do it<\/h3>

The method consists primarily of traditional haymaking and a complete stop to the use of fertilisers, as most wild plant species in Denmark disappear from areas where farmyard manure or artificial fertiliser is applied.<\/p>

The hay is cut once a year, either around 1 June or around 1 September, according to a carefully planned schedule. No more than half of the area is ever cut at one time.<\/p>

The cut hay is then dried and removed. This removes some of the nutrients from the soil, gradually creating favourable conditions for many important flowering plants to return in abundance.<\/p>

These include species such as field scabious, tufted vetch, bird\u2019s-foot trefoil, wild marjoram, lady\u2019s bedstraw, common knapweed, harebell, red clover and oxeye daisy.<\/p>

It will take several years to reach this point, but the positive development began as early as 2021 and was expected to become clearly visible from 2022 onwards.<\/p>

To provide shelter and variation, a number of \u201cislands\u201d have been created with stones, exposed soil and low earth mounds, where trees and shrubs are allowed to grow to a height of three to four metres.<\/p>

A few selected trees that appear naturally in the area are also marked and preserved as landmarks in the landscape. However, there will not be so many that the beautiful view of the sea is obscured.<\/p>

At the lowest point of the area towards the south, a pond of approximately 600 square metres was established in November 2021.
A winding network of grass paths, approximately two metres wide, has also been laid out throughout the area. The paths are mown with a lawnmower, allowing visitors to walk through the area and enjoy the flowers, wildlife and art.<\/p>

The purpose<\/h3>

The aim is for the area to become a meeting place for art and people, and for art and nature \u2013 particularly the flower-rich and butterfly-rich nature associated with warm, sunny and nutrient-poor habitats, a type of nature that has become scarce on Bornholm.<\/p>

At the same time, the Butterfly Meadow will become a place where visitors can join guided walks every summer with people who can tell them about the nature of the area and how it is developing.<\/p>

In time, it will also be possible to collect seeds from many of the most important wild plants, so that those who wish can sow them in their own gardens, benefiting butterflies and other insects.<\/p>

Events in the Park<\/h3>

Every year, haymaking is carried out on the site in cooperation with Bornholms Lelaug and the agricultural museum Melstedg\u00e5rd.
